Archival history

Sir David Baxter of Kilmaron (1793-1872) was a flax and jute factory owner, and local Dundee businessman. At his death in 1872, he left a bequest £20,000 for the establishment of a mechanics institute in Dundee. This went on to fund the creation of the Dundee Technical Institute that went on to become Abertay University. in 1994.
